The Passion Behind Fitness by Faith

I started Fitness by Faith with one goal in mind.  I want to help people get healthy in every aspect of their lives.  Here is my story and why I have a passion to help others:

I was married about four and a half years ago to an amazing man.  It was because of this love I felt from him that I started letting myself go.  I felt secure, and I didn’t see a need to watch everything I ate.  Why would I?  I had landed the man of my dreams and tricked him into marrying me;)  It was the first year of marriage that the weight started coming on strong!  I did not know it was possible to gain this much weight in so little time.  I was starting to get embarrassed when I went out to do things with others, but at that point it was not enough to do anything.  I could still fit into my clothes and that was all that mattered.

Bigger and bigger I continued to get until finally I had enough.  I went through a period of time when I completely disliked everyone who I saw eating like I was, but not gaining any weight at all! How is that possible?  I was so upset.  It was at that time that I started “watching” what I ate.  Instead of having pizza for dinner, we would have some stir fry (without the soy sauce) or some vegetable fajitas.  I was so lucky to have a husband who supported me and loved me despite the weight I had clearly gained.

I knew my method for trying to lose weight wasn’t working when I had to finally bit the bullet and go out to buy more clothing.  It seemed like everything I had owned shrunk.  This was one of the lowest points I have ever been at.  I felt like no one understood especially since I was surrounded by skinny people!  It seemed like everywhere I went I was the biggest person in the room.  I had gained 25-30 pounds, but for a 5 ft. 3 in build that was a lot!

I knew it was at a pivotal moment in my life.  I could continue doing the same things I have been or I could completely change my destiny and be the person I knew I wanted to become.  It wasn’t going to be easy nor did I know if I could do it, but I knew I had to at least try.

I started my workout program very easily with just doing a couple of exercises on the WII and taking walks with my husband and new puppy Eddie.  I found myself excited about how much I looked forward to these at the end of our work day.

From there, I started walk/jogging.  I know this sounds funny, but I started walking for 2 minutes, then jogging for 1 minute.  My husband (who is very disciplined and a runner) helped me so much during this time.  He helped me realize I could run for the whole minute straight without walking.  It was slow at first, but I got faster.  As I started getting faster, I started adding time to the jogging part and less time to the walking part.  I become so good in my mind that I started being able to run a whole 10 minutes without stopping!

This was a huge turning point for me!  I found myself not only getting more disciplined in working out, but also in my eating.  I realized that “watching” what I ate earlier on wasn’t as healthy as I had once thought.  My husband and I started eating better, and in turn started feeling better.  Looking back at that time in my life, I realized that I was in a “fog” like state and it was hard to do anything. Eventually, by the end of the summer I was able to jog 30 minutes without stopping!

Since then, I have continued to workout 3-7 days a week for about 4 years now.  I have done a variety of workout programs, and love all the different forms of working out available!  I have taught fitness classes at the YMCA for a couple of years, and have done a variety of workout programs through online, dvds, classes, and creating them for myself.

In addition to my workout regimen, I also continue to strive to eat healthy everyday.  I have had a few health scares in the past 3 years, and from those experiences have realized how important it is to feed your body with nutrition.  Once you start feeding your body the nutrients you need your body starts to crave those foods.  It will get easier and easier to eat healthy!  I essentially “trained” my body to eat whole foods since I was used to processed foods up until that point.

It has been a long 4 years, but I finally feel comfortable in my own skin.  I have lost all the weight I had gained in my first year of being married, and I can fit into clothes I haven’t been able to fit in since college!  I am not to my goal weight, but have thrown the scale away and go based on how I feel now instead of a number.

It is a daily struggle, and I think of my favorite quote when I started feeling down.

I know firsthand how difficult it can be, and that is why I created this blog to help others get to where they want to be!  I have helped others I have known personally, and absolutely love seeing them succeed.  I love being there for them when they need some extra support (like we all do sometimes).

I know my struggle is an everyday struggle, but I intend to continue to live a healthy life with the help of our Lord.  I would not be where I am today without His guidance and His push during those dark times.
